Where to Eat (Roman) Pizza in Rome

Pizza in Rome isn’t just food. It’s a ritual. While pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) is perfect for a quick lunch on the go, standing up or on a curb, round pizza is meant to be savored, usually for dinner, and always sitting down. Even better if it’s paired with an ice-cold drink and loud conversations. For us Romans, it’s the ultimate comfort food.

Unlike its soft, pillowy Neapolitan cousin, Roman pizza is all about crisp edges, thin bases, and a satisfying crunch that comes from high-heat wood ovens and expertly handled dough. It might even be a little burnt. Toppings are generous but never overdone, and while the classic Margherita still reigns supreme, Roman pizzerie offer endless combinations, from the traditional to the boldly inventive. To each their own, of course, but whatever your style and taste, there’s a pizza out there for you.

If you’re looking for the real thing, the kind of pizza you think about on the flight home, these are the places I always go back to and never disappoint.

A true Trastevere institution, beloved by locals and packed with character. The crust is always paper-thin and perfectly charred, the atmosphere lively and chaotic in the best way, and the waiters as Roman as they come (shoutout to Domenico!). Never skip the fried starters.

Just a few steps from the Colosseum, this unfussy spot has been serving up reliable pizza since the 80s. It’s the perfect place to land after a long walk through the Forum. Once you’re done exploring ancient Rome, do as the Romans do and sit down for a crunchy pizza.
