The Culture of Food in Sardinia

  • Sardinia
  • September 14-20, 2025

Italy is a country where every region tells a unique story, rich in history, culture, and flavors. Even after a lifetime here, I’m still amazed by how different each region feels, as if every trip takes you to a whole new world. Sardinia, or Sardegna as it’s known in Italy, left that exact impression on me during my first visit as a child—an experience filled with wonder, as if I had stumbled upon a hidden land brimming with magic and new discoveries.

Sardinia is one of Italy’s two largest islands and is often celebrated for its stunning, crystal-clear beaches. But beyond its postcard-worthy coastline lies an island with a distinctive soul, shaped by centuries of traditions. With its own language (Sardu), unique recipes, rare ingredients, and a vibrant connection to music, dance, and crafts, Sardinia offers an unforgettable cultural experience unlike any other in Italy.

Over the years, my love for Sardinia has grown as I’ve explored more of its hidden treasures, venturing beyond the usual tourist paths. Now, I’m excited to share this passion with you through a carefully crafted week-long journey designed to showcase the heart of Sardinian culture. We’ll explore both the central and southern parts of the island, diving deep into its culinary traditions while uncovering its rich history and local customs.

I hope you can join me for a week filled with authentic flavors, off-the-beaten-track experiences, and a genuine taste of Sardinian life. By the end of our journey, you’ll not only gain a deeper understanding of this enchanting island, but also a love for the people and their traditions.

Day 1: Arrival and Introductions

Our adventure begins in Sardinia’s serene countryside, where we’ll be staying at Su Gologone Hotel, a charming retreat nestled in the hills just outside Oliena. This peaceful oasis is the perfect spot to unwind after your journey. You’ll have time to settle into your room and take in the tranquil surroundings before we gather later that evening to officially kick off the week.

In your room, you’ll find a welcome package thoughtfully prepared to enhance your stay, including a bottle of wine, water, and some local snacks to enjoy.

Evening

To start the week, we’ll meet for drinks on the hotel’s panoramic terrace, where you can take in sweeping views of Sardinia’s rugged, dramatic landscape. It’s here that you’ll be introduced to Sophie and Angelo, our licensed guide for the week. They’ll share a bit about themselves and give you an overview of the experiences that await you in the days ahead.

After drinks, we’ll head to our first dinner together at the hotel. Depending on the weather, we may dine in the romantic courtyard under the stars or gather near the cozy open hearth in the dining room. Dinner will be a delicious introduction to Sardinian culinary traditions, which are uniquely distinct from the rest of Italy. We’ll also have our first taste of Sardinian wine—a perfect way to begin this unforgettable week of food, culture, and discovery.

Day 2: Exploring Sardinian Shepherd Life

Morning

We’ll hop into 4×4 vehicles and head off-road, winding through the rugged hills surrounding our hotel. As we drive through this striking landscape—dotted with windswept trees and herds of goats—you’ll get a sense of Sardinia’s untamed beauty.

Our destination is a remote shepherd’s hut, where we’ll gain insight into a way of life that remains central to Sardinia’s culture and economy. You’ll learn about the rich tradition of herding, which has been passed down through generations.

We’ll have a rustic, authentic lunch inside his traditional pinnetthu—a small, conical hut used by shepherds. Gathered around the fire he uses for cooking, we’ll share a simple, hearty meal while hearing stories about his daily life and the importance of shepherding in Sardinian heritage.

Afternoon

We’ll return to the hotel around 4 PM, and you’ll have the rest of the afternoon to relax at your own pace. Take a swim, unwind with a massage, or simply enjoy a drink while soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Evening

Dinner is on your own this evening, and you can dine at your leisure at the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 3: Cheese, Craft and Song

Morning

This morning, we head east toward the coast to visit a charming farm known for raising a special breed of sweet-tempered goats whose milk is used to produce exquisite cheese. As we tour the farm, which overlooks the breathtaking Bay of Orosei—one of Sardinia’s most spectacular seaside settings—you’ll learn about the art of goat cheese production. During a live demonstration, we’ll see the traditional methods used to create this local delicacy.

For lunch we head to the family’s agriturismo, where we will not just the goat cheese, but a very special local pasta.

Afternoon

On our way back to the hotel, we’ll stop in the quaint village of Dorgali. Here, we’ll enjoy a coffee break at a local bar before visiting a master goldsmith who practices the ancient Sardinian art of filigrana. This intricate technique of crafting delicate, lace-like designs from fine strands of gold is a true testament to Sardinia’s rich artisanal traditions. Few artisans still practice this craft, making this visit a rare and fascinating experience.

Evening

After some time to rest back at the hotel, we’ll gather in the early evening for a special culinary demonstration. You’ll witness the preparation of pane carasau, the crisp, cracker-like flatbread that is a beloved staple throughout Sardinia. Enjoy this freshly baked treat along with a glass of wine as we’re serenaded by a private concert of traditional Sardinian folk songs, performed by singers from a nearby town.

Day 4: Filindeu, Seadas, and a Change of Scenery

Morning

We’ll pack our bags and get ready to change hotels. But before we arrive at our new destination, we have an exciting and full day ahead of us.

Our morning is dedicated to exploring one of Sardinia’s most fascinating and rare culinary traditions: Filindeu, often called “the threads of God.” This pasta is so rare that only a handful of people still know how to make it. We’ll spend the morning delving into its history—learning not only how it’s meticulously crafted but also the religious holiday it honors and the remarkable women who have preserved this ancient skill across generations.

Next, we’ll discover one of Sardinia’s most iconic desserts: Seadas. These beloved pastries hold a special place on the Sardinian table. Made with tender, sweet dough filled with sheep’s milk cheese, seadas are deep-fried to golden perfection and drizzled with a rare, fragrant, bitter honey.

After our cooking session, we’ll sit down to enjoy a feast of the delicacies we’ve just learned about.

Afternoon

After lunch, we’ll drive south to our home for the next three days: Cagliari. We’ll be staying at Palazzo Doglio, a charming hotel in the heart of the city. After checking in, you’ll have some time to rest and settle in before we gather in the early evening on the hotel’s outdoor terrace for a light apericena—a casual, relaxed meal featuring small bites, drinks, and good company.

Day 5: Exploring Cagliari

Morning

Today we are exploring Cagliari, Sardinia’s vibrant capital and largest city, located along the seaside.

Our day begins with a visit to the bustling farmers’ market, where we’ll browse an array of local produce, from fresh fruits and vegetables to artisanal cheeses and sweets. You’ll have time to shop for goodies to take home—whether it’s Sardinian pecorino, traditional candies, or any other treasures you can fit in your bag.

Next, we’ll take a leisurely walk through Cagliari’s historic center, sampling local specialties as we go. As the island’s capital, Cagliari offers flavors from all over Sardinia, and we’ll taste a mix of sweet and savory treats that reflect the island’s rich culinary diversity. Along the way, we’ll pass some of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Bastione di Saint Remy and the majestic cathedral

Afternoon

The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at your own pace. Whether you choose to explore more of the city’s hidden corners, visit museums, or simply relax with a coffee at a local café, we’ve got you covered. We’ll provide a list of our favorite restaurants and recommendations for sites and neighborhoods worth visiting. And, of course, we’re happy to offer tips and advice to help you make the most of your free time in this charming city.

Day 6: Seaside & Farewell

Morning

After breakfast, we’ll set off for a special day with our friend Eleonora, who will introduce us to her village and the people who call it home.

Our journey takes us along a scenic coastal road to the charming seaside town of Pula. Here, we’ll take a leisurely stroll through the town’s narrow alleyways, stopping for a coffee break and a sweet treat at a local bar.

Before lunch, we’ll visit the ancient site of Nora, a stunning archaeological treasure located right by the sea. As we explore the Roman ruins, you’ll discover the remnants of an amphitheater, intricate mosaics from a Roman villa, and other fascinating structures that reveal the island’s ancient past.

For lunch, we’ll be welcomed into the warm and inviting home of Eleonora’s grandparents. At Nonno’s house, we’ll enjoy a traditional homemade meal featuring family recipes that are rarely found in restaurants—an authentic taste of Sardinian home cooking.

Afternoon

On our way back to Cagliari, we’ll make one last stop at the enchanting Villa d’Orri, an 18th-century estate that feels frozen in time. Though it’s usually closed to the public, Eleonora has arranged a private visit for us, giving us the rare chance to wander through its romantic gardens and grand, historic rooms.

Back in Cagliari, you’ll have the late afternoon free to explore at your leisure or begin packing for your departure.

Evening

In the evening, we’ll gather for our final meal together. After our hearty lunch, we’ve planned a lighter dinner at one of our favorite local spots, where we’ll enjoy shared small plates and toast to our incredible week together.

Day 7: Departure

Our tour is officially over, and we will be checking out of the hotel in Cagliari.
