Central Puglia, which includes the Itria Valley and world-famous Alberobello, is the part of the region that most people imagine when they dream of a trip here: whitewashed hill towns, olive groves that seem to stretch forever, trulli scattered across the countryside, long seafood lunches by the sea and warm evenings in tiny piazzas. I’ve been coming here with my family since I was little, and so many of my childhood memories come from long summers spent exploring these small towns. It really feels like the heart of Puglia to me, full of small family-run places where you can eat incredibly well without trying too hard.
Everything is close, so you can wander between towns like Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino or Ceglie Messapica and feel like you’re discovering something new each time. The food is simple and rooted in the land: vegetables from the garden, local meats cooked over charcoal, handmade pastas and cheese from the next town over. It’s the kind of area where long lunches turn into slow afternoons, and where every meal feels connected to the landscape around you.
Here are my favorite places to eat in Central Puglia, those that for me capture the warmth and spirit of Italy’s heel. The itinerary moves roughly from north to south to make planning your trip a little easier.
